Long day today after this incident. Girlfriend and I are fine, will find out tomorrow if we have any lurking injuries. But a few hours later and nothing is even sore so we should be alright.
I will have quite the story to tell after all of the insurance hullabaloo has been sorted. But basically some nutjob lost control of their vehicle and rammed into us. They then proceeded to try to flee the scene but they didn’t get too far due to this little problem:
So now not only has this idiot caused a multi car wreck but he has also ended up with a hit and run and whatever else he had going for himself that motivated him to run in the first place. And yes that is a Jeep wheel so this is some Jeep on Jeep violence right there!
Anyways, it was caught on video by a local business, there were multiple cars hit, many witnesses in broad daylight, and insurance will deal all the crap. So I’ve got nothing to worry about, just a minor hiccup to my vacation. Getting a new rental car in the morning since it was too much to deal with tonight.
Just glad we are safe back at the Airbnb and life will move on. Hope that guy sees some jail time but I have no idea how the legal system works. I’m going to continue enjoying the lovely weather and relaxing on island time.
Should have stayed for sunset, would have avoided all this altogether. Oh well, can't see the future! Too bad we were hungry.

I'm just happy the windows were down to avoid glass problems. And no airbags went off and we didn't really get jolted at all. The rear wheel took the brunt of the collision which meant we were fine in the front. I'm sure the other guy felt some pain but he brought that on himself I suppose. Crushing my fingers putting the top up the day before hurt more lol.

DAYM, Oppo is NOT having good luck lately with their vehicles! :(
Glad you’re both OK! How bad is the damage to the back of your Jeep? Think they’ll try and repair it?

It could’ve been worse. Dog the Bounty Hunter might have showed up and started bossing the situation.
Good to see you both came away without physical injury. Keep an eye out for internal symptoms.

I got clipped by a drunk driver 7 or 8 years ago. He hit right behind the rear wheel. I got jerked a little bit didn’t think much of it. Next day my back was a little sore. After that it was pain and physical therapy. Still have occasional issues to this day.

Dayum! Glad you're both ok.

Glad you are ok and the Jeep did just enough to keep you that way. Honestly looked at Jeeps for a short while but the side impact crash rating warded me off. Looks like it was just enough in this case thankfully.
Hope you can enjoy the rest of your vacation.

Must be one of those Jeep things that we don’t understand....
glad to hear you guys are okay though. That’s all that matters.

It's not my Jeep at least. Rental vehicle and all that. So at least i could care less about what happens to it. I have dual coverage between my credit card and own car insurance. And they caught the guy anyways and charged him at fault. So it should all work out. Just annoying paperwork and I'm sure I'll get stupid fees that I have to argue at some point. Just a waste of my time.

Feeling fine the next day but will continue to monitor it. Helps be in our 20s so we are still young. I had some seat belt soreness yesterday but it didn't bruise and it's fine today now.

Yeah I’d be concerned about those doors holding up in a direct accident. Most of this guy’s momentum was still going forward when he over steered into us. Since all of his parts were strewn about the road behind us. And our car wasn’t moved at all, just the rear fender ripped off and the obvious damages. That rear door was ripped in half even with that though so full force impact to the side would probably be bad. Maybe the doors arent part of the crash structure at all though so it's more a question of how the frame held up in terms of safety.

Talking to bystanders, there were police actually looking earlier for the individual who crashed into us. So he was pretty much a wanted criminal for something else. That plus no license explains why he might decide to run. Although with only three wheels it was a rather poor choice. He easily could have ran over a pedestrian like that or flipped while trying to turn. Bad choices all around there!

Got any recommendations as oppos resident insurance person? My credit card has rental coverage and my personal auto insurance is good and already handling it all. But it's the rental company that I have no idea what they will do and all that crap. Mountains of paperwork I assume but thankfully I should be 100% covered with my insurances.

They then proceeded to try to flee the scene but they didn’t get too far due to this little problem:
hahaha
!!
Fuckers. Idiots. Seriously, people, ugh.
I hope they get everything they got coming. Wonder if they were on drugs or alcohol too. Glad you’re OK and no personal losses.

Yeah my first thought was that dude must be drunk or high and/or no insurance. It is kinda not the nicest area, I don't like to judge but I wasn't surprised to see someone run here. Like its beautiful and all but obvious it's a lower income part of the island away from the resorts. Especially down in town where this happened. I'm just glad we weren't on the way to our next Airbnb and the police officer gave us a ride back to our current place. Or even worse if we were on the way to the airport or something. At least it's a story to tell!

Did you get the at fault guys insurance?
I would imagine that like you say, it will be a few forms and phone calls but work out in the end.

I didn’t get any of his information since he ran away. Police arrested him though so I’m guessing it will all be in the police report. He did conveniently leave his license plate behind with the wheel though at least. I'm looking forward to posting the video eventually as well, it's a good watch of the events.

Hopefully he has insurance! Either way, you should be fine.

Yeah typical of my homeland, there is a reason why I stopped riding! Lots of kooks.

Isn't it better if he has no insurance? Uninsured motorist coverage is usually pretty good. But I have no idea, I'm worried about my rates going up or something. Or losing my no claims discount.

I think I was 25. Just for more fun, dude drove off and then into a house. Fled on foot from the cops.

That is the most concerning element in all of this.

Without knowing the local statues or anything, I don’t see anything to worry about.
Don't let it ruin your vacation!

I had a friend get nailed in a hit and run. Cop asked if they had gotten the plate number. My friend handed the frame and plate that was ripped off on the interstate bumper of his truck when the guy hit him.
